It’s a fact of life that UK car insurance is a lot more expensive for young drivers. Perhaps it’s down to the statistics that younger drivers cause more accidents and make more claims, or maybe it’s simply because most insurers prefer drivers with a bit more experience. Whatever the reason, it can be incredibly frustrating for younger drivers that simply want to get out there and drive.
Not only is it more expensive, but for some people finding any companies to insure them is a feat all in itself. Some simply don’t like to insure them, particularly for certain makes and models of car, but just because it’s difficult it doesn’t mean that all hope is lost.
You’ll still be able to find companies out there that will insure younger drivers (albeit at more expensive rates), and if you spend the time to look there shouldn’t be a problem. It’s even worth looking for companies that can offer cheaper premiums, as paying for car insurance isn’t most people’s idea of fun.
One of the most important things you can do is shop around. Make sure to thoroughly check all price comparison sites to find the best deals, as while you’ll usually still be paying more than older drivers there’s no reason that a good deal can’t be found. Sometimes it’s worth looking for smaller, specialist companies, as there’ll always be someone out there that can offer a policy.
It’s also worth thinking about the car that you want to be driving. While younger drivers may love something that’s exceptionally fast and sporty it isn’t always practical, and you may not even be able to find anyone to insure you. You’ll often find that a lot of cars simply can’t be insured unless the driver is over 25, so it might be worth downgrading for a while. It’ll certainly be cheaper, as even if you do manage to find an accommodating company trying to insure a younger driver on a fast and powerful car can be incredibly expensive.
So, while finding UK car insurance for younger drivers can often be difficult, if you spend the time to shop around it needn’t be a lost cause. Once you’ve accepted that it’s going to be more expensive it all seems a lot easier, but if you do you research (and choose an appropriate car) you’ll be able to find an insurance policy without breaking the bank.
