If you are a student, then you may want to consider dental insurance. Despite having the NHS, a large proportion of people cannot get free dental treatment once they reach a certain age, and this can become fairly costly in the long run, especially as this is often unexpected.

To save being bombarded with costs and teeth problems when you really don’t need them, consider taking out a student dental insurance plan.

First you need to know what these plans are. Simply put, if you make a series of payments over a period of time, you will be insured for specific dental needs, so long as you abide by certain conditions. Usually these plans will cover a range of things, though unlike more common insurance plans, dental ones are very specific. In general though, the more you pay the better care you receive, you just need to find a cost-efficient balance.

The main types of policy will include those that cover the costs the NHS would face; usually the bare minimum needed. Insurance however can also provide for private treatment which could save you a lot of money if you are in need, but may not always be necessary.

As with a lot of insurance, however, there will be a lot of limits and caveats involved, you just need to make sure you know exactly what you are covered for, under what conditions. The costs will vary depending on the amount of cover, but in the end you should compare and find out which is best for you.

You should also be aware of restrictions you may face – anyone with poor teeth to begin with or current issues will be able to get insurance but pay more for it so you should be taking reasonable steps to ensure good dental hygiene (you shouldn’t need a monetary reason for this though!). It is also unlikely that an insurer will cover anything that is not urgent, for example do not expect cosmetic treatment to be covered, remodelling (orthodontics), dental implants, or sports injuries that could have been avoided through wearing a mouth-guard.

At this time, there are no specific student dental insurance plans so you will be looking at policies designed to cover anyone. You may be able to achieve a discount through the Student’s Union and any deals they have made with providers so it is always worth checking
